The Delaware Law Related Education Center, Inc. (DELREC) is a private nonprofit, 501c(3) organization which has provided services to Delaware's schools and the community for nearly a decade. Its most widely known programs are the Delaware High School Mock Trial Competition and the "We the People" Competition.
The mission of the Center is to provide resources to enhance the presence of law-related education initiatives in Delaware. DELREC is a statewide consortium of educators, attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers and other community leaders. It seeks to promote active learning experiences and skills development for students who need to function in a society based on the rule of law.
Law-related education is defined in federal law as "education to equip nonlawyers with knowledge and skills pertaining to the law, the legal process, and the legal system, and the fundamental principles and values on which these are based". The content of law-related education includes such concepts as justice, authority, equality, property, liberty, responsibility and privacy. There is also a focus on how these concepts may be in conflict. The development of higher level thinking skills is a key part of law-related education. Students develop skills in critical thinking, decision making, communication, reasoning and managing conflict. Law-related education promotes a commitment to the rule of law and to democratic values and beliefs.
